Take It From A Townie: Exploring East Lyme, Connecticut’s Best Day Trips

Rocky Neck State Park Near Nightjar

Looking to level up your summer adventures? Whether you’re visiting from out of town or just rediscovering your own backyard, East Lyme is surrounded by some seriously scenic gems – and all of them are just a short drive from Nightjar. While we definitely don’t recommend lighting up in public places (stay safe, stay legal), let’s just say these spots could theoretically pair well with good vibes and a well-timed sesh – at the right time, in the right place, and with total discretion, of course.

Here are a few of our favorite outdoor escapes near Nightjar that are a vibe, all on their own.

Devil’s Hopyard State Park

30 minutes north of Nightjar

If you’ve ever wanted to hike through a forest that feels like it holds ancient secrets – or at least some really good trail mix – Devil’s Hopyard is your spot. It’s got scenic trails, a charming covered bridge, and Chapman Falls, one of the most photogenic waterfalls in Connecticut. Whether you’re into light trekking or just posting up with a picnic blanket and a really good playlist, this park is a perfect nature escape. Just remember: leave no trace, and that includes everything.

McCook’s Beach and Park

10 minutes from Nightjar

The beach, a big grassy park, and the occasional live music event? Yes please. McCook’s is a coastal classic, and its proximity to Hole in the Wall Beach and the Niantic Boardwalk makes it an easy choice for a relaxed afternoon. You can stroll, sunbathe, or zone out to the sound of waves. You might find yourself particularly tuned in to the seagulls if you happened to prep beforehand…you know, responsibly, and off-site.

Rocky Neck State Park

Just 5 minutes from Nightjar

This place has it all: sandy beaches, forested trails, and even campsites if you’re feeling the call of the wild (and maybe a campfire s’more or two). Rocky Neck is the kind of park where time slows down, and everything feels just a little extra magical. Ideal for a lowkey hike, beach day, or even a meditative moment in the dunes.

Pro tip: It’s very close to Nightjar, so if you need to stock up on your favorite products before heading out, we’ve got you covered.

Harkness Memorial State Park

20 minutes from Nightjar

Imagine strolling through sprawling gardens, historic architecture, and rolling lawns that lead straight to the beach. That’s Harkness. It’s the perfect place to pretend you’re in a period drama – or to quietly contemplate how incredible the clouds look right now. It’s peaceful, picturesque, and just a little bit surreal in the best way.

(We’re not saying it’s the ultimate low-stimulation vibe spot, but… yeah. It kind of is.)

Ocean Beach Park

25 minutes from Nightjar

Classic beach vibes meet retro nostalgia at Ocean Beach Park. From Monday night classic car shows to mini-golf and occasional concerts, this is the kind of spot that makes you feel like summer vacation never really ended. It’s family-friendly, yes – but also kind of a trip in its own right. You’ll want to take your time here, wander, snack, and maybe ponder the deeper meaning of soft serve.

Final Thoughts

Whether you’re chasing waterfalls, strolling boardwalks, or staring out at the ocean until you forget your to-do list, East Lyme has something for every type of adventurer. Just remember: open cannabis consumption in public places isn’t allowed, so plan ahead, be respectful of local laws and other visitors, and above all – keep it classy.
