How to Get Your Medical Marijuana Card in Connecticut (From Your Friendly East Lyme Nightjar Dispensary!)

A medical marijuana prescription being written next to cannabis containers. Get your medical marijuana card in Connecticut.

Hey there, friends in East Lyme, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme, Essex, Waterford, Groton, Montville, Lyme, and beyond…

A lot of you have been asking how to get your Connecticut medical marijuana card, and we’re here to help. Why get a card? Is it hard? How long does it take?

You’re in luck – this is actually the easiest time in the history of CT’s medical marijuana program to get certified. And if you’re searching for a dispensary near me, we’re right here at Nightjar East Lyme, a welcoming hybrid dispensary serving both medical and adult-use customers. Let’s dive in!

A Quick History of CT’s Medical Marijuana Program

Connecticut legalized medical cannabis in 2012, and the first medical dispensaries opened in 2014. But when adult-use cannabis was legalized in 2021 and sales began in January 2023, the spotlight shifted to the recreational market.

As of mid-2025, there are 70+ dispensaries in the state – but only THREE are medical-only. About 20 of us, like Nightjar East Lyme, are hybrid dispensaries that proudly serve both rec and med patients.

Because of the drop in demand, prices to get certified have plummeted, and the state even eliminated its $100 registration fee. Now, the whole process usually costs under $125 total – sometimes even less.

Ready to join the program? Start by visiting the official Connecticut Medical Marijuana Program Portal, Biznet.

Here’s what you get as a certified medical patient:

  • Zero taxes  –  You save 22–25% on every purchase

  • Exclusive access to topicals, capsules, high-concentration products
  • Consultations with our pharmacists (hi, Laurie, Laura, and Kirstin!)
  • Larger purchase limits  –  up to 5.0 oz vs. 1.0 oz for adult-use buyers

So if you’re in East Lyme or anywhere nearby – Old Lyme, Waterford, Groton, or Montville – and searching “dispensary near me,” getting certified could save you money and expand your options.

How to Get Your CT Medical Card in 3 Easy Steps

1. Schedule an Appointment

Any licensed CT provider – MD, PA, or APRN – can certify you if you have a qualifying condition.

Try your current doctor first. If they don’t offer certification, we’ll help you find one who does! Just make sure you have a document showing your diagnosis. Most providers offer an evaluation – and won’t charge you unless you qualify.

Pro tip: Avoid providers charging over $125. Prices are competitive, and you deserve a fair deal.

After your appointment, you’ll get a “Patient Certification Email” from [email protected] that includes your application instructions.

2. Submit Your Application via Biznet

Use the link in the email to create your Biznet account, activate it, and log in. Select “I am a Patient,” enter your date of birth, and check your personal info for accuracy.

Then, choose your dispensary from the dropdown – select CT Nightjar 1 to register with us in East Lyme.

You’ll need:

  • Proof of ID (e.g. driver’s license, passport)
  • Proof of CT residency (e.g. utility bill, lease)

Need help uploading these? Call us – we’ll walk you through it! 860-850-5130

Once submitted, your card is usually approved within 48 – 72 hours (subject to change dependent on applications in the queue, though the site says 30 business days).

3. Receive Your Medical Marijuana Card

You’ll get an email with the subject line: “Patient Approved.” Your digital medical marijuana card will be attached as a PDF.

Print it or email it to [email protected] and we’ll laminate it for you – free of charge. We’ll keep it safe at the front desk for your next visit to Nightjar East Lyme.
